Motor along this, approximately, 240 mile loop (estimated travel time: 5-9 hours) for a chance to win a fabulous Porsche prize! The Telluride Festival of Cars & Colors Rally Master will have already made this trip prior to the Festival dates and established a ‘time to match’ which will be known to only the Rally Master until Saturday.
The “Million Dollar Highway” gets its name from the estimated value of the ore-bearing mining tailings fill that was used to construct the road (and because it was incredibly expensive to build!). The highway passes over Red Mountain Pass (11,008 feet) and the Uncompahgre Gorge. A marvel of extreme engineering, it was designed by Russian immigrant Otto Mears and slices through rugged mountains as it follows old stagecoach routes and former pack trails.
Start your Rally journey between 9am-10am from Heritage Plaza of Mountain Village during the Morning Revv at the Cars & Colors Lounge. “Punch” your Rally Time Card and head out on the San Juan Skyway Scenic Byway. From Mountain Village Blvd you will travel highway 145 along the San Miguel River through Placerville before turning onto Hwy 62 over the Dallas Divide (one of the most photographed places in Colorado). You will continue through Ridgway joining Hwy 550 through Ouray, over Red Mountain Pass, past Silverton, over the Million Dollar Highway and into Durango. From there you will take Hwy 160 to Mancos before heading north to Dolores, Rico and end your journey in the Town of Telluride where you will again “punch” your Rally Time Card (cut off time is 6pm). The participant that most closely matches the Rally Masters time will win $5000! This event is open to any vehicle owner with a 2017 4 Day Festival Pass and will be Friday (9/22/17) ONLY. The winner will be announced Saturday (9/23/17) at the Hanger 29 evening event at the Telluride Airport, 6pm-9pm.
A little more explanation:
Our Rally is pretty simple. We have a Rally Master who is only known to a few Festival Staff, not to anyone else. He or she does the loop along the Million Dollar Highway from Telluride Mountain Village and back to the Historic Town of Telluride (approx 240 miles).
The Rally Master establishes a time for that loop and keeps it to themselves, and only they know the time until after all participants have checked back in on Friday, not even staff members will have this information until late Friday evening. The rally participants (must have a 2017 4 day festival pass) drive the same loop the Rally Master drives, starting between 9a-10am on Friday morning from the Heritage Plaza of Mountain Village where we will mark down your departure time. You must be checked back in on Friday evening no later than 6p in Telluride (specific end location TBD), where we will mark down your arrival time.
No other time, speed or destination restrictions are restrictions other than the towns you will be passing through on the journey: Mountain Village, Placerville, Ridgway, Ouray, Silverton, Durango, Mancos, Dolores and Rico. We do take an odometer reading at start and finish, just to make sure you enjoyed the entire loop. The Rally Master could stop for gas, stop to take photos of all the great scenery, stop for a brief snack or a long lunch so, their time is a mystery until the announcement of the winner on Saturday evening.
The participant time that most closely matches our Rally Masters secret time wins the prize!
