Million Dollar Highway Road Rally
Tour one of America’s most scenic byways on the Million Dollar Highway Road Rally
See some of the amazing scenery Colorado has to offer, visit some of the great towns along this approximately 240 mile round trip loop and make some cash!
History: The “Million Dollar Highway” gets its name from the estimated value of the ore-bearing mining tailings fill that was used to construct the road (and because it was incredibly expensive to build!). The highway passes over Red Mountain Pass (11,008 feet) and the Uncompahgre Gorge. A marvel of extreme engineering, it was designed by Russian immigrant Otto Mears and slices through rugged mountains as it follows old stagecoach routes and former pack trails.
Details: Rally participants (must have a 2019 Telluride Festival of Cars & Colors 4 Day Festival Pass to be eligible for prizes) will motor along this, approximately, 240 mile loop (estimated travel time: 5-8 hours) for a chance to win a cash prize! The Telluride Festival of Cars & Colors Rally Master will establish a ‘time to match’ which will be known to only the Rally Master until Saturday evening. The Rally Master could stop for gas; stop to take photos of all the great scenery, stop for a brief snack or a long lunch so, their time is a mystery until the announcement of the winner on Saturday evening.
Rules: After clocking in at the Cars & Colors Lounge, you may start anytime between 9am – 10 am and must check back in before 5 pm but, no other time, speed or destination restrictions are enforced. We do, however, take an odometer reading prior to your departure and upon your return, just to make sure you enjoyed the entire loop.
Rally Route: Start your Rally journey from Heritage Plaza of Mountain Village during the Morning Revv at the Cars & Colors Lounge. “Punch” your Rally Time Card and head out on the San Juan Skyway Scenic Byway. From Mountain Village Blvd you will travel highway 145 along the San Miguel River through Placerville before turning onto Hwy 62 over the Dallas Divide (one of the most photographed places in Colorado). You will continue through Ridgway joining Hwy 550 through Ouray, over Red Mountain Pass, past Silverton, over the Million Dollar Highway and into Durango. From there you will take Hwy 160 to Mancos before heading north to Dolores, Rico and end your journey at the Telluride Regional Airport where you will again “punch” your Rally Time Card (cut off time is 5pm). The participant that most closely matches the Rally Masters time will win the cash! This event is open to any vehicle owner with a 2019 4 Day Festival Pass and will be Friday (9/27/19) ONLY. The winner will be announced Saturday (9/28/19) at the Hangar 29 evening event at the Telluride Airport, 6pm-9pm.
Enjoy the scenery, watch the road and be safe!
(TFCC Staff and Volunteers are encouraged to participate in the Rally but are not eligible to win prizes.)
